Teaching Philosophy
My philosophy of education is twofold: every child can learn and every child has the right to receive a meaningful education in a safe and healthy environment. I believe in providing a secure environment within the classroom by facilitating open communication between teacher and students. If a student feels comfortable and safe within the learning environment, then he or she will subsequently feel free to explore his or her own individuality and interests. From there, the child will be able to celebrate his or her own independence and identity. My lessons are student-centered and driven by expectations of achieving personal excellence. I design and create activities and lessons that focus on integrating various mediums (music, art, drama, technology) so that I can reach, teach, and address the multiple intelligences of every child. I believe that for learning to take place, students and teachers need to be excited, motivated, and engaged with both their subject material and the learning process.
I support my students and guide them to find the tools inside each of them to be life-long learners, capable students, successful and productive people who are ultimately in charge of their own leaning. While my teaching techniques are both progressive and traditional in style, I strive to design lessons around the curriculum that allows students to have choices with how they want to learn. I empower them and show them that their ideas are important and should be heard and considered. I have found when the voices of children are acknowledged it builds their self-esteem, and with higher self-esteem comes an eagerness to learn. Within my classroom, I provide plenty of opportunities for my students to learn by doing and learn by teaching.
I base my teaching upon mutual respect, communication, hard work, creativity, and a healthy sense of humor. I believe learning, is not only academic, but also social and emotional. My students and I are consistently always aware of acknowledging who is being kind to others and who is encouraging others to learn. I believe one of my greatest strengths is my deep concern for the well being of my students and their images of themselves as learners. I strive to create a secure and positive environment where students will take the risks necessary to construct their own ideas and openly listen to those of their classmates; thus my classroom becomes a family in which the skills learned are not just book skills, they are skills learned for life, multifaceted, positive, and ready for any community.
I continuously push myself to learn new ways to reach my students with up to date, best practice teachings. The framework I use includes Writer’s Workshop, Reader’s Workshop, Literature Circles, Learning Centers, and Simulation Activities to encourage higher-level thinking and decision-making skills. Assessment is designed to meet the learning styles found within the classroom and evaluations are based on student growth and performance in relation to curricular and individual goals. Tools used to assess student understanding include student observations, writing samples, class discussions, student self-evaluations, art pieces, multimedia presentations, creative expression, 1:1 conferencing, tests, and portfolio collections.
As an educator, it is my job to inspire and motivate my students into realizing their own potential. As a result, the achievements of all of my students are these: students leave my classroom believing in and recognizing their strengths. Students leave my classroom knowing that they are successful, knowing that they have a voice, striving for personal excellence, and knowing that they can conquer anything.
Children have an inherent desire to communicate, socialize, and acquire knowledge, and it excites me to be in a position where I can inspire them to believe in themselves and their potential. I know I can make a valuable contribution to a student's education.
